DIY Smart Home: Narrowing the gap between users and technology

چکیده

Over the past decade, we have been building intelligent systems to provide assistance for persons with dementia wishing to age-in-place [1]. These systems are built using partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) controllers. While the POMDPs provide a framework for long-term model learning and reinforcement learning, they must be engineered to fit each situation and user to ensure adoption. Custombuilding a smart home solution is a time-intensive exercise, in which technologists extract and encode knowledge from end users. As this process is neither easily understood by, nor accessible to, end users, we are exploring this problem from two complementary directions. From the user perspective, our research with older adults and family members has revealed the need for practical, customizable systems that can be set up and managed by “informal caregivers”. From the technological perspective, we have developed a method by which POMDP-based smart-home controllers can be specified at an appropriate level of abstraction using probabilistic relational modelling and a database schema for assistance systems. Our goal is to close the gap between these perspectives by designing interfaces for end-users to express contextual knowledge, needs, and preferences in a natural way to build custom smart home solutions in an organically developing, DIY (“doit-yourself”) fashion. Smart Home, The Next Generation: Closing the Gap between Users and Technology

In this paper we discuss the gap that exists between the caregivers of older adults attempting to age-in-place and sophisticated ”smart-home” systems that can sense the environment and provide assistance when needed. We argue that smart-home systems need to be customizable by end-users, and we present a general-purpose model for cognitive assistive technology that can be adapted to suit many di...

The design methodology for studying smart but complex do-it-yourself experiences

This article illustrates design-oriented human–computer interaction (HCI) research for creating do-it-yourself (DIY) experiences for emerging technologies. It contemplates the design objectives for the DIY construction processes through the lens of Ecological Approach to Smart Environments (EASE) and by exemplifying three case studies. The first case study introduces the design of the Home Cont...

Design and Validation of a Conceptual Model for Narrowing the Gap between Intended, Implemented, and Attained Curricula in the Public Education System in Iran

Abstract: The present research aimed at developing and validating a conceptual model for narrowing the gap between intended, implemented, and attained curricula in the public education system in Iran. Two fundamental questions guided this investigation: what model can be developed to reduce the gap between the three mentioned curricula? To what extent does the proposed model gain the approval? ...

End User Security and Privacy Concerns with Smart Homes

The Internet of Things is becoming increasingly widespread in home environments. Consumers are transforming their homes into smart homes, with internet-connected sensors, lights, appliances, and locks, controlled by voice or other user-defined automations. Security experts have identified concerns with IoT and smart homes, including privacy risks as well as vulnerable and unreliable devices. Th...
